Driver and passenger safety is a key issue as transportation technology develops. With human error the cause of up to 90 percent of highway crashes and up to 50 percent of peak-period delays caused by crashes, technology is playing an increasing role in safety and security. According to a survey by HNTB Corp., 52 percent of those surveyed prioritized the reduction of accidents or safer travel conditions as the most important use of transportation technology. Travel time guarantees and improving the environment were priorities for only ten percent of survey respondents. Additionally, 71% of those surveyed believe new transportation technology should be used to improve safety on highways.
