USDOT Beyond Traffic Forum in Denver

Panel forum including Bob Yaro, Mayor Hancock, Secretary Foxx, Governor Hickenlooper, and Kelly Brough.

Infrastructure is a major concern for Americans: making sure we have a transportation system that can carry today's and tomorrow's needs is paramount. The United Stated Department of Transportation (USDOT/www.dot.gov) acknowledges this concern and has developed a program it calls "Beyond Traffic 2045". The 30-year framework will use data, research, expert opinions, and public engagement to consider the shape, size, and condition of the future system and how we can meet the needs and goals of the future.

As part of this framework, the USDOT initiated 11 megaregion forums throughout the United States. The Front Range megaregion, expanding from Albuquerque to the Wyoming border via Colorado Springs, Denver, and Fort Collins, held its forum on October 28. After opening remarks from Mayor Michael Hancock, Governor John Hickenlooper, and Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, the three joined Kelly Brough, CEO and President of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, and Bob Yaro, Co-Chair of America 2050, for a discussion of transportation issues within Colorado.

The priorities mentioned in the panel included:
  • I-25, I-70, and FasTracks;
  • Finding funding solutions that maximize opportunities and make the dollar go further, and also remove different funding silos;
  • Multi-modality, choice, and mobility, meaning cars should not be the only solution to our transportation problems;
  • Safety, making the transportation system safer for every user;
  • Consider how to partner with and engage businesses, because they also are the ones who use the system;
  • Investing in technology, because we still use primitive technology in certain industries; and
  • A need for placemaking to connect Coloradans.
