A dramatic increase in bicycling worldwide could save
society US$24 Trillion cumulatively between 2015 and 2050 while reducing CO2
emissions by 11 percent in 2050 when compared to a scenario without a high
bicycling emphasis according to A Global
High Shift Cycling Scenario by Jacob Mason, Lew Fulton, and Zane McDonald. This
2015 study is an update of a study done in 2014 to provide a global assessment
of the potential for increasing travel with sustainable, efficient modes. The
2014 study highlighted an increase in bicycling from 3 percent today, to 6 percent in
2030. The 2015 study examines the benefits of a larger increase in bicycling.
