Accounting for the Growth in Digital Technology in Transportation Planning

As demonstrated by the self-driving truck that successfully traveled 120 miles between Fort Collins and Colorado Springs last month, emerging technology has the potential to substantially impact the movement of people and goods. Bob Graves, Associate Director of the Governing Institute, discusses the importance of accounting for technology's impact on infrastructure planning.

The exponential growth in technology, such as with ride-sharing, driverless cars, and drone package delivery, may have a variety of impacts on traffic congestion, mobility, and land use. Graves encourages the use of exponential-planning analysis to incorporate emerging technology into infrastructure planning.
