New tunnel to extend Fossil Creek Trail in South Fort Collins

Map credit: Coloradoan

A new tunnel is being built to connect the Fossil Creek Trail through Redtail Grove Natural Area to Shields Street and Cathy Fromme Prairie Natural Area. Two pieces of the Fossil Creek Trail will connect to the tunnel, which will carry the trail underneath the BNSF Railway's embankment west of College Avenue. The 1.2-mile extension will use a mini-excavator to dig out the soil where a larger excavator lifts away the excavated dirt. The trail will be 11 feet, 10 inches wide. The trail should open by the end of 2017 or early 2018.
