A 3-mile section of US34 running through the Big Thompson Canyon will reopen 4:00 p.m. this Thursday, May 25, 2017 after a closure that began in October, 2016. During this time, workers removed over 380,000 cubic yards of rock from the walls of Thompson Canyon to move the road away from the Big Thompson River. This project strives to mitigate the possibility of damage associated with high-magnitude floods akin to the 1976 and 2013 flood events. Construction will resume in October 2017, with another reopening in May 2018. The project is slated to wrap up in December 2018.

For more information about this project, read the article in the Coloradoan.
