How will autonomous vehicles (AVs) impact our transportation system, and how can we prepare for them? These are some of the questions addressed by Robert Puentes, CEO of the Eno Center for Transportation, at the Seminars at Steamboat on July 30.

Puentes, a leading transportation policy expert, stated AVs are a generation to 50 years down the road, but rules and regulations need to be implemented now to guide the process.

While there is no federal legislation on AVs, Colorado passed a law last year allowing driverless vehicles if they follow state and federal driving regulations. Local city and county governments can plan for AV technology in a variety of ways, such as by updating parking and curb space policies to account for the impact of AVs.

Major hurdles for AV technology include determination of liability, protection from cyber attacks, and ability to drive in a variety of weather conditions.
