Utah Raises Interstate Speed Limits

Over the past few years, a range of states have increased their maximum speed limits on Interstate Highways. In particular, Utah has raised the speed limit to 80MPH along a 250-mile segment of I-25 and to 70MPH on urban interstates near Salt Lake City.

Raising the speed limit, though, has caused a debate about the relationship between traffic safety and traffic speeds. Officials in Utah noted that highway crashes have decreased on Interstates as speed limits have increased. There has also been a reduction in the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit. On the other hand, traffic safety officials, the U.S. trucking industry, and the Utah Highway Patrol noted the higher risk and crash severity related to excess speed.
