Multiple Uses for UAVs in Transportation

Michigan Tech University teamed up with the Michigan Department of Transportation to investigate the use and applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Research included analyze roads, take 3D images of bridge decks, record traffic crash scenes, fly under bridges, and investigate various public utility structures. The research focused on five main types of UAVs, varying in size and numbers of rotors. Research found that the UAVs can provide a multitude of information and can be used to increase safety and decrease the cost of operations, maintenance, and asset management.
