A new report finds that speed is likely underestimated as a factor in fatal crashes, and encourages changes at a variety of levels to address speeding. A summary of the report by The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was released in late July, and the full report will be available soon.
The report finds that higher speeds increase the likelihood of being involved in a crash as well as the severity of the crash. Additionally, speeding accounts for nearly the same number of crash fatalities as alcohol.
To improve safety, the report recommends major changes including a national anti-speeding campaign, deploying more speed cameras, and changing the rules for setting speed limits.
